What are Shortfill E-liquids?
If you have spotted larger bottles of e-liquids in stores or online, they’re probably shortfill liquids. The liquid in these bottles is nicotine-free, ideal for sub-ohm and DTL vapers who use higher-powered devices such as sub-ohm tanks. It’s important to note that shortfill liquids are not compatible with all vape kits, especially low-powered or basic pod devices, due to the viscosity of the liquid itself.
Each shortfill bottle has space left at the top for you to add your own nicotine ‘shot’, usually around 10ml for 50ml bottles or 20ml for a 100ml bottle. -
Are all Shortfill Liquids Nicotine Free?
Shortfill liquids are typically nicotine-free due to the EU’s Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) regulations regarding the legal size of e-liquid bottles containing nicotine. These regulations make life harder for sub-ohm vapers who get through more e-liquid per day than standard MTL vapers! In order to get around this, larger nicotine-free bottles of e-liquid were created with space for vapers to add their own nicotine.
-
Are Shortfill Liquids Suitable for Beginner Vapers?
If you’re just getting started on your vaping journey, shortfill liquids are probably not for you. These liquids are best suited to more advanced vaping kits, which require more upkeep, maintenance, and knowledge than disposable vapes and starter kits. High VG shortfill e-liquids should only be used in devices with low-resistance (sub-ohm) coils. If you’re not sure whether your vape device is suitable for shortfill liquids, check your user manual to see what type of liquid is best for the device.
Once you are comfortable with vaping and want to upgrade your kit, this is an excellent time to experiment with shortfill liquids. -

What are Nicotine Shots?
Nicotine shots, also known as nic-shots, look similar to your standard 10ml bottles of e-liquid. While nic-shots are typically unflavoured, you can get ‘ice shots’, which add a cooling sensation as well as a nicotine hit. The nicotine shot is then mixed into the shortfill liquid.
Can You Vape a Nic Shot?
While it is safe to vape a nic shot on its own, we wouldn’t recommend it for vapers looking for a flavoursome experience! Unflavoured nicotine shots should be used as intended and mixed into a flavoured shortfill bottle.
What are the Different Types of Nicotine Shots?
There are different types of nicotine shots available to try, including standard freebase nic shots, nic salt shots, nic-cool shots, and 100% VG nic shots. Let's take a closer look at each one.
● Freebase nicotine shots are the standard ‘shot’ for shortfill vapers. With a 70% VG ratio, they’re similar to standard shortfill e-liquids and won’t impact the thickness of the e-liquid.
● Nic-cool shots are infused with a blast of cooling method or ice flavouring. They are created using freebase nicotine; the only difference between these and freebase nic-shots is the flavour.
● 100% VG Nic Shots are typically used by vapers who are intolerant or allergic to PG and are best used with 100% VG shortfill liquids.
● Nic-salt shots contain nicotine salts, a type of nicotine known for its smooth throat hit and faster absorption rate than freebase nicotine. With a 50VG/50PG ratio, these nic-salt shots can impact the thickness of your e-liquid if added to a high VG shortfill. -
How Much Nicotine Do I Need to Add To My Shortfill E Liquid??
It is important to note that the nicotine strength of the shot will be diluted when added to the shortfill nicotine-free liquid. Each shortfill bottle has enough room to add one 10ml shot per 50ml of e-liquid; this ensures that it stays TPD compliant and that the maximum strength does not exceed 3.3mg. Lower nicotine strengths can be achieved by using lower-strength shots or only adding some of the shot to the bottle. While it may sound complicated to work out how to get the right strength for you, the below calculator should help!

How to Add a Nicotine Shot to Shortfill Liquid
Now you’ve calculated how much nicotine you need to add, it’s time to start mixing your liquid.
Let’s take it step by step!
1. Remove the nozzles from the shortfill bottle and the nicotine shot bottle.
2. Pour the nicotine shot into the shortfill bottle using the calculator above. Fill to the very top of the bottle.
3. Place the nozzle back on the shortfill bottle and secure it in place.
4. Shake the liquid for at least 1 minute to make sure all of the nicotine is mixed in with the liquid. For optimal results, leave the mixture to sit for at least an hour to improve the overall flavour. -
